Chiluba, Frederick Jacob Titus
President of Zambia 1991-2002

Chiluba started his political carrier as a union leader of the Zambian Congress of Trade Unions, and as such he was serving as a opposition leader against the single party government of president Kenneth Kaunda. In February 1991 he became elected leader of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy MMD, that achieved in the October election of the year 1991 more than 80% of the votes, removing Kaundas UNIP-Party from power. Chiluba started an ambitious economy reform programme, privatizing many state owned companies and removing price controls. Chiluba was reelected in 1996, and survived an attempted coup in 1997. He stepped down at the end of his term on January 2nd 2002, was charged with stealing substantial amounts of public funds on 24.02.2003 and arrested on 5.08.2003.
