Doe, Samuel Kanyon

President of Liberia 1980-1990
(6.05.1951 Tuzo/Liberia - 9.09.1990 Monrovia/Liberia)
Doe was non-commissioned officer in the Liberian army, when he overthrew the ruling president William R. Tolbert jr. with 17 ordinary soldiers on 12.04.1980. Tolbert was killed and around 30 government members and associates were executed in public later. Till July 1985, when the first elections after the coup took place, all political activities were banned. At least according to the official results Doe was presented as the winner of the elections with 51% of the votes and sworn in as president on 6.01 1986. The policy of oppression against some tribes executed by Doe as a member of the Krahn tribe lead into the outbreak of a civil war in winter 1989, when the National Patriotic Front of Liberia NPLF headed by Charles Taylor invaded Liberia coming from Cote d'Ivoire. Since the Liberian army was coming extremely under pressure, Doe asked for ECOWAS support to stabilize the country. 4.000 ECOMOG-peacekeepers were sent into Liberia. During a visit in the ECOMOG-Headquaters in Monrovia Doe was captured on 9.09.1990 by a fraction of the NPLF, the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia INPLF headed by Prince Yormie Johnson and brutally executed.
